The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, or VA, has over 9 million veterans enrolled in its health care system. Veterans often require extensive medical care, which puts a strain on families who don’t live near VA hospitals yet want to be with their loved ones. A core mission of the American Red Cross is to provide humanitarian support to military members and their families and for the past two years, the Red Cross has partnered with Fisher House as a key resource for veteran families during health crises.

A Quiet Presence After the Storm

In the aftermath of deadly Hurricane Helene in 2024, an American Red Cross volunteer noticed a boy sitting quietly in a shelter in Macon, Georgia. 

What began as a simple observation became something deeply meaningful.

“There was a family that was in desperate need, and they had a child who they said didn’t talk to anyone,” recalls Disaster Mental Health Volunteer Leslie Grant. “And I said, ‘May I try talking with him?’ And I sat down on the floor. He was rolling a little car back and forth to himself. And I sat down about 10 feet away. And I just sat there. 

“And then I moved a little closer, and I slowly moved closer. And he rolled his car to me. And I introduced myself. And he rolled the car; we rolled it back and forth.

American Red Cross NCCR Volunteers Provide Relief to Thousands of Alaskan Survivors of Typhoon Halong

When American Red Cross volunteer Karl Matzke, from Santa Clara County, received the call to organize a team and deploy to Alaska, there was no hesitation in his decision to go. As one of the Divisional Leads for Operations Management, he ran the operations for the first shelter that opened in Alaska just three days after Typhoon Halong devastated the region on October 12.

Neil went the extra mile to help set up a shelter in the middle of the night

You may have seen American Red Crossers on the news handing out food or welcoming people into disaster shelters. But you may not have seen the countless volunteers working tirelessly behind the scenes of a disaster response. Staff Planning and Support Service Associate Neil Katin is one of those people.

Neil has responded 39 times to disasters, big and small, in-person and virtually, to be the first and last Red Crosser that volunteers speak with during their deployment.

Goodies, Good Company and Guidance: Red Cross Supports Veterans at Stand Down Event

Colin Clover comes from a military family. When asked how many of his family members are in the Armed Forces he said, “Too many to mention!” Although he didn’t go into the service himself, he wondered how to support people like his grandfather, cousins, aunts and uncles who had served in the Armed Forces.

Then he found out about the Service to the Armed Forces work of American Red Cross and he had found a way to help. First, he was a volunteer and now he is an employee working as a program specialist for Service to the Armed Forces and International Services.
