Volunteer’s heartfelt note inspires us this holiday season
During this time of year, when we remember the special people in our lives, it’s impossible to overlook the amazing work of the many volunteers who are at the heart of everything we do in the American Red Cross.
Dwayne Taaffe is one such volunteer, supporting our Central Coast Chapter’s Disaster Action Team. Following an early-morning response this week in which Dwayne and other members of our team provided “canteening” services to firefighters responding to an industrial fire in Salinas, Dwayne sent me the following email in response to a quick thank-you note. Peg Geringer’s impact on the American Red Cross can be described in many ways: the different lines of service she has supported as a volunteer, her tenure as chair of the Silicon Valley Chapter’s First Aid Services Team (FAST), or just by some very impressive numbers.
On October 27, nearly 400 Northern Californians sought refuge at the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building. People arrived in various states of readiness, some at peace, some in distress. And many of them experienced transportation issues before even reaching the Red Cross shelter.
