For retired nurse Colleen Sasso, becoming a volunteer for the American Red Cross in 2009 was a perfect opportunity to do something other than nursing. It was a good plan, or so it seemed at the time.
“I had had a long and wonderful career at the San Francisco VA Medical Center,” Colleen says. “I worked in intensive care and was in charge of nursing in the Radiology Department. And I loved working with veterans.” Read more
When Los Altos Hills resident Florence Buatois was asked in 2012 to join the Silicon Valley Chapter’s Board of Directors, she accepted the Red Cross leadership position without hesitation. Starting 40 odd years ago, 300 like-minded members of the Adidam Spiritual Community moved to Lake County to be near the Mountain of Attention Sanctuary, one of the worldwide group’s meditation centers. Each year, a small number of people from our region are selected to receive Clara Barton Awards, the highest honor that the American Red Cross bestows upon its volunteers. The award recognizes meritorious service in volunteer leadership positions held over a period of years.

Art Bruns hasn’t been the type to let everyday challenges get in the way of him doing great work for the American Red Cross — for the past 20 years. He seems just too optimistic for that, possessing an inquisitive mind that is paired with a can-do attitude.
