Meet Mia Fahad, our Regional International Services volunteer. She has been accepted into the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Solferino Academy’s Limitless programs (Limitless LEAD and Limitless 2.0), an international professional development opportunity. Hundreds applied but only 10 spots are reserved for American Red Cross participants. The Limitless LEAD programs are for Red Crossers who are already active in the space of humanitarian innovation and seeking an opportunity to advance their skills in leadership and coaching. They will go on to support the mentorship of Limitless 2.0 participants in their innovation journey.

Learn more about Mia and what she looks forward to the most in participating in this unique program through an interview with Red Cross Communications volunteer, Anika Kurkut.

No Matter the Stage of Life, The Red Cross is There

By Jina Amstutz

Crystal Sims loved serving in the military. For 14 years she served as a Physical Therapist on active duty in the Army, a role that took her on a journey across the country and around the world. She would still be commissioned as an officer in the Army today if not for an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis, and its subsequent treatment and recovery.

Despite going through such a difficult situation, Crystal did not stop pursuing what she loved most: when her husband was recently stationed in Monterey, CA, she found her way to serve the active-duty military population at the Presidio Clinic as a Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces volunteer.

Crystal’s training and experience in physical therapy provided expanded treatment options for the clinic’s patients. She served in the morning sick call clinic and treated patients with musculoskeletal concerns. Working alongside military and civilian staff, Crystal had the opportunity to provide guidance and mentorship, drawing from own her personal experience.

Many blood donors are proud of their donations for various reasons, and my parents are two of those donors who are really proud. Tracy Cox and Susan Smithcamp-Cox are long time blood donors and have shown me as their daughter, Caitlin, that I too can give back to the community by being part of the American Red Cross.

When I was quite young, I started going with my dad to Delta Blood Bank in Turlock which later became a Red Cross Donation Center. When I would go with him, I would always work on a puzzle while he was giving blood.

Born and raised in California, Vicki Pelton was deeply inspired to help people after a nine-month trip to Africa. Seeing poverty-stricken people tugged at her heartstrings and she felt compelled deeply to give back in some way. Once back on U.S. soil, the Mountain View resident signed up with the Palo Alto Area Chapter of the Red Cross (currently known as the Silicon Valley Chapter), beginning her 34-year journey as a Red Cross volunteer.

Over the years, Vicki has learned and fulfilled multiple roles, or Group-Activity-Positions (GAP) with the Red Cross, including Recovery, Logistics, and Disaster Services Technology (DST). She enjoys the fact that the Red Cross constantly creates new positions and provides opportunities to train for those new roles. She just finished training for a position within the Disaster Cycle Services team as part of the E3 initiative: Every Shelter, Every Day and Every Need. This initiative streamlines the supply distribution for all shelters during a Disaster Response Operation.

To Japan and Back

Volunteer Spotlight on Renee Grossman by Kat Slusser – American Red Cross

Imagine leaving your comfortable, predictable life to offer your time as a Red Cross volunteer halfway around the world. That’s exactly what California resident and Services to the Armed Forces Red Cross volunteer, Renee Grossman, did when her spouse, an active-duty service member, was deployed to Japan.

Renee spent two and a half years on Yokota Air Base in Tokyo, Japan. She was looking for a way to give back and make friends in the community, so she volunteered with the American Red Cross through an office located in the air base. She met local Japanese residents who also volunteered and was afforded the opportunity to learn from others in the community.

For more than 30 years, patients at the David Grant U.S. Air Force Medical Center’s McClellan Outpatient Satellite Clinic have received a warm greeting from David McCullough as they entered the premises. Since August 1993, Darryl has volunteered with the Red Cross at the clinic every week Monday through Friday. Medical center personnel call him the “face of the clinic.”

Darryl greets and talks with patients at the front desk and often escorts them to their appointments in the building. To ensure it’s a welcoming space for all visitors, he goes above and beyond to sanitize the waiting area and conference rooms. In addition, Darryl helps the administrative department with tasks such as copying and sorting papers.
