Remembering last fall’s Northern California fires

north-bay-fires_full-sizeDuring the devastating Northern California fires this past October, every person who fled their homes — and in many cases, lost them —  has a story to tell. So do the many Red Cross people who heroically stepped up to help in response to one of the most destructive weeks of fires in the state’s history.

Consider helping with ‘Missing Maps’ project

These maps have already helped save lives following disasters in Nepal, Haiti, Ecuador, West Africa, and Madagascar.

Each year, disasters around the world kill nearly 100,000 and affect or displace 200 million people. Many of the places where these disasters occur are literally ‘missing’ from any map, and first responders lack the information to make valuable decisions regarding relief efforts. “Missing Maps” is a collaborative project in which organizations, companies, and individuals are helping to map areas where humanitarian organizations are trying to meet the local needs.

The American Red Cross is a key partner in this effort. Read more

Red Cross to install free smoke alarms, provide fire-prevention information to homes in Watsonville on August 25

CARMEL, CA (August 16, 2018) — On average, home fires kill 7 people and injure another 36 — every single day in the United States. That’s why the American Red Cross launched its nationwide Home Fire Campaign in 2014 with the goal of reducing the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent.

A key component of the campaign is a series of “Sound the Alarm – Save a Life” events in which Red Cross volunteers, working with local fire departments and other partners, visit high-risk neighborhoods to offer to install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms, and help families create escape plans. It is believed that the “Sound the Alarm” neighborhood visits have already saved more than 450 lives throughout the United States since the Home Fire Campaign began.

On Saturday, August 25, a Sound the Alarm event will take place in the city of Watsonville. Read more
