Organization is key for this Red Cross volunteer

For Donna Logan, the call to help came after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. The devastation that this natural disaster left in the state of Louisiana and nearby states — and the effect that it had on the country as a whole — was enough inspiration for Logan to get involved with the Red Cross. She had been retired for about a year, and Logan was looking for causes in San Francisco with which she could get involved. With a master’s degree in organizational development and a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Logan hoped to find a position in which she could use her experience and skills.

As a volunteer with the American Red Cross, Donna Logan has more than done that. And this year, she was honored for her many contributions and compassionate work when she received a Clara Barton Award at the annual Volunteer Recognition Event for San Francisco volunteers. Read more

Red Cross supports Fleet Week Humanitarian Village

San Francisco has always had a special relationship with the US Navy. One example of that is San Francisco Fleet Week (SFFW), which began in 1981. The annual celebration of America’s sea services takes place over Italian Heritage Weekend in October on the Marina Green.

Through its core mission of Support to Armed Forces (SAF), the American Red Cross has been a consistent and strong supporter of Fleet Week. Read more

Wars, ethnic cleansing, genocide, and poverty — having plagued humanity for centuries — sadly continue to be part of our heritage today. The terms are synonymous with death, destruction, and the displacement of millions. But in spite of everything, there is still HOPE, manifest in the work of a humanitarian organization that lights the way amid the darkness.

From 1941 to 1944, the Germans subjected Leningrad, the former capital of Russia known today as “Saint Petersburg,” to one of the longest and most destructive chapters of World War II. Historians believe that the Siege of Leningrad — occurring over a nearly 900-day period — resulted in the deaths of up to 1.5 million soldiers and civilians and the evacuation of another 1.4 million people, mostly women and children. Red Cross celebrates its San Francisco volunteers

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (August 29, 2018) — The American Red Cross of the Bay Area honored 18 individual volunteers, a youth club board, and a partner association at its recent Recognition Dinner for San Francisco volunteers. The annual event was held at GAP Headquarters in the city.

At the dinner, George de Bruin of San Francisco received the San Francisco Volunteer of the Year Award. The evening’s other top honor, the Clara Barton Award, named after the founder of the Red Cross, was given to Donna Logan of San Francisco. Read more

Red Cross celebrates its San Mateo County volunteers

BURLINGAME, CA (August 29, 2018) — The American Red Cross of the Bay Area honored 14 individual volunteers, a youth club, and a community partner at its recent Recognition Lunch for San Mateo County volunteers. The annual event was held at Holbrook-Palmer Park in Atherton.

At the lunch, Jim Holley of Half Moon Bay received the San Mateo County Volunteer of the Year Award. The afternoon’s other top honor, the Clara Barton Award, named after the founder of the Red Cross, was given to Keith Hoffman of Redwood City. Read more

Red Cross celebrates volunteers in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties

Oakland, CA (August 9, 2018) —  The American Red Cross of the Bay Area honored 31 volunteers from Alameda and Contra Costa counties at the annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner, which took place at Pleasant Hill Senior Center in Contra Costa.

The evening’s top award, the Clara Barton Award, was given to Briana Taylor of Contra Costa County. The award, named after the founder of the American Red Cross, recognizes a volunteer for service in a series of leadership positions held over a number of years. Read more
